16 Travel Essentials I Never Leave Home Without

On average I travel every 2-4 months so I’ve developed a packing routine that includes a meticulously categorized checklist for various destinations and climates. Life is so much easier when you know exactly what to bring and never forget the essentials.

It’s always a good idea to limit the amount of stuff you jam in your suitcase but I’m not the backpacking type.

I might not always need 5 eye shadow palettes or 6 pairs of shoes for a weekend getaway, but there are a few beauty items and gadgets I never leave home without.

1. iPad Pro 10.5” 256GB ($1000.000 – available at various retailers and apple.com/ca)
When I’m on a press trip reviewing hotels, tours, attractions etc, my iPad is always in my purse. I actually have 2 iPads that I take on all trips for photography, work, emails, social media and keeping in touch with family. It is lighter than a lap top and helps reschedule my travel itinerary due to last minute cancellations. During long layovers and boring overseas flights, it keeps me distracted with movies, games and music...it is basically my lifeline.

2. Kindle ($130 - $180 at amazon.ca)
Technically I can use my iPad as an e-reader but my Kindle is light, small and loaded with classics. You’d be surprised how much reading you get done during long airport delays.

3. Foreo Luna Mini 2 ($159.00 - beauty.shoppersdrugmart.ca)
If you don’t have a Foreo Luna in your life, you definitely need one! This small yet powerful face brush delivers 8,000 sonic vibrations per minute and removes up to 99.9% of dirt, oil, bacteria and makeup lodged deep in your pores. The hygienic silicone bristles dry quickly and do not harbor bacteria. Simply apply your favorite cleanser, adjust the intensity (there are 8 levels) and move the device in circular motions. It is gentle enough for daily use.

4. Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment ($32.00 ea - Sephora)
My lips get super dry while jet-setting around the world and this conditioning balm is loaded with sea fennel, orange extract, jojoba, grape seed oil, avocado oil, black currant, rose water and more! The creamy formula drenches parched skin in supple moisture that prevents chapping for hours.

5. Compression Socks ($9.99 - avon.ca)
When you’re trapped 30,000 ft in the air, sitting for hours can inhibit blood flow and cause swelling. To maintain proper circulation during long flights, it is important to get up and stretch or walk down the aisle. Compression socks push blood back to the heart and prevent tired legs and sore feet. If you travel as much as I do or work long hours at a desk job, these socks are great for your health.

6. Foreo ISSA Play Electric Toothbrush ($59.00 - Shoppers Drug Mart)
This handy little toothbrush pulsates 9,000 times per second and the flexible bristles remove plaque, food and bacteria while gently massaging sensitive gums. It lasts up to 800 uses without having to change the batteries and the waterproof coating is made of antibacterial silicone.

7. Personal Humidifier ($29.99 - airinnovations.com)
At home I use my Air Innovations Humidifier every night so I got the travel-size version to improve my breathing and keep my complexion healthy in polluted environments. Airplanes are extremely dry and the air quality in hotel rooms can be musty and saturated with dust, dander and impurities.

This cute Ultrasonic Personal Humidifier is perfect for small rooms (up to 150 Sq Ft). The built-in UV light kills 99.9% of bacteria and the machine uses a standard plastic bottle as a water reservoir which can last up to 14 hours! I love how easy it is to use and the steady stream of cool mist improves sleep quality, helps you overcome jet-lag and alleviates cold/allergy symptoms. It also rehydrates dry eyes, skin, hair and nasal passages so you don’t wake up with dry mouth or a scratchy throat. If you don’t like the leopard print it comes in a variety of colors and designs.

8. Conair Clothing Steamer ($29.97 - Walmart and conaircanada.ca)
When I start packing, my clothes are neatly folded and orderly but when I arrive at my destination or travel to several cities/countries, everything is creased and crumpled. I don’t usually have the patience for ironing and direct heat can damage delicate fabrics.

The Conair Complete Steam has a compact design that is great for travel and quick touch-ups. The wide nozzle delivers high velocity steam that penetrates garments to smooth, freshen and de-wrinkle in minutes! Simply fill the water tank and press the power button for a steady stream of heat that can also be used on bedding and drapes to disinfect and kill dust mites. I like to steam the hotel pillows before bed to ensure they are safe to sleep on.

9. The Perfect Purse
I like to stay organized and keep my valuables protected so good luggage and durable travel bags are a great investment.

My favorite travel purse is the Poppy and Peonies Downtown Crossbody ($99.00 – poppyandpeony.com). It is spacious without being bulky and has lots of pockets with sturdy zippers and shiny gold accents. I love the removable tassels and the inner compartment has enough room for my tablet, camera, phone, wallet, beauty essentials and touristy things. The long strap slings comfortably across the body and can be positioned in front of you for quick access and pick-pocket protection.

10. Carry-On Bag
For weekend trips, short getaways and picnics, I love my Lug Via Travel Bag ($145.00 - luglife.ca) which is part tote and part backpack with detachable straps. This functional design has pockets everywhere including a zippered pouch for shoes, a smaller section for ID/business cards and an insulated pocket for food. It is also large enough for a few outfits, toiletries, water bottle and umbrella.

11. Repiel Korean Masks ($8.00 - beautella.ca)
Vacationing is fun but long flights, air pollution, greasy food and fatigue can wreak havoc on your complexion. The Repiel Perfect Fit Moisturizing Mask softens, smooths, diminishes blemishes, strengthens and protects dry skin with a combination of bamboo water, oriental dew drop, antioxidants, oils and coconut extract. There are a variety of formulas available to address specific concerns including: Firming (anti-aging), Soothing, Pore Solution and Daily Vit to brighten and improve texture.

12. Elizabeth Grant Caviar Cellular Recharge Super Eye Pads ($40.00 / 6 pack - tsc.ca)
My eyes always need a bit of pampering during and after an exciting trip so I pack a couple Elizabeth Grant Eye Masks enriched with hyaluronic acid to moisturize, refresh and energize. They also help smooth wrinkles and reduce puffiness so you look well rested and alert.

13. Korres Greek Yogurt Makeup Removing Wipes
($20.00 per 25 available at beauty.shoppersdrugmart.ca)
Infused with vitamins, minerals, lush oils and proteins, these soft clothes eliminate stubborn foundation, eye shadow and waterproof mascara while moisturizing and revitalizing. Keep them in your carry-on to refresh your face during the flight.

14. Nourishing Skincare (arbonne.com)
When you’re trying to pack light, all-in-one products are your best bet. Arbonne’s Rejuvenating Cream ($52.00) is formulated with a long list of botanical emollients to soften every part of you. The luxurious oils, antioxidants and butters deeply moisturize your face, body and hair.

When traveling to hot humid climates, a good makeup setting spray is imperative! Let it Set ($45.00) keeps your face fresh, hydrated and shine-free while shielding pores from pollution and dirt. The mist dispenses in a light puff of liquid that cools, soothes and leaves skin feeling incredibly supple.

Hand cream is a staple in my purse and I always keep a tube in my office, car, living room and bedside table. Arbonne’s Shea Butter formula ($26.00) is gentle, non-greasy, fast-absorbing and ultra hydrating to heal dry skin on-the-go. It also treats ragged cuticles, brittle nails and chapping.

15. Logitech Keyboard - so I can get some work done on my iPad.

16. If you don’t have an e-reader or iPad, don’t forget a good book! A Thousand Splendid Suns is my favorite novel.

I have many other items on my list but these are just a few things that make my trip more enjoyable. What’s in your suitcase?

Travel Essentials & Gadgets

While traveling the world over the last several years, I’ve become somewhat of an expert packer. When your luggage gets lost in  Rome or winds up in German while you’re in Dubai, you learn a thing or two about being prepared and what kind of essentials come in handy. Today I’m featuring a few products and gadgets that have made my journey more comfortable.

Aside from durable luggage that can withstand environmental assaults and careless baggage handlers, tags are very important. My suitcase has gone missing on a few occasions and if it isn't easy for the airline to identify, you may never find it. These bright, trendy tags from Conair ($10.00) are easy to spot in baggage claim and they cater to you inner fashionista with fun designs and bright prints. To read my article on how to pack a carry-on bag click HERE.

While vacationing or on press trips, I like to hit up the best dining and entertainment spots, which means packing formal wear and a nice perfume that can go from day to night. These small bottles from Yardley London ($18.00 ea) are the perfect size for travel and they come in a variety of fresh, floral scents including Lilly of the Valley, English Rose and Lavender – very light and summery. Yardley is available at Shoppers Drug Mart and beautyboutique.ca

Comfortable shoes are a must, especially if you plan to explore the city on-foot and book some of those awesome sightseeing tours. All that walking or hiking can be brutal on the feet and the cobblestones in Europe can cause aches and pain. The Ecco Bio Venture GTX Tie all-round outdoor shoes ($250.00) support, cradle and cushion the feet with rubber insoles suitable for rough terrain. The lightweight, waterproof construction keeps you dry while the foam soles provide long-lasting comfort. I can walk for hours in these without any discomfort and they are idea for physical activity. To see other styles visit the website by clicking HERE.

Admittedly, ironing is my least favorite chore and if it weren’t for my husband, I’d probably give up and embrace the crinkles and wrinkles. While on vacation, the last thing I want to do is deal with annoying ironing boards and fiddle with foreign irons that always seem to leak or burn my outfit. The Conair Complete Streamer ($49.99) is compact for travel yet powerful enough to smooth and freshen your favorite garments. It heats up in just 60 seconds with a large steam head that works on most fabrics. Clothes will be crease-free and look neatly pressed in minutes, saving you many trips to the drycleaner. Conair is available at various retailers including The Bay, Walmart, Costco and online at conair.ca.

After your clothes are freshly steamed you may need to delint. I love wearing dark colors (especially black) but for some reason I only seem to notice the lint after I’ve left the house or hotel. If you’re still using those old fabric lint brushes or sticky paper that do the bare minimum, it’s time to upgrade to the Conair Extreme Fabric Defuzzer ($24.98). This little gadget removes fuzz, lint and pilling with a gentle suction fan that shaves off debris without damaging fabrics. It comes with a built-in rechargeable battery and you can use it anytime-anywhere to keep your clothes looking new.

I pack all my makeup in my carry-on because - 1. Losing all the high-end products in my luggage would be painful and 2. I don’t want to walk around looking like a jet lagged zombie the entire trip (I need my concealer). A good makeup bag keeps your products well organized and the variety of colors and designs from Sonia Kashuk are some of my faves! The bags have large compartments, removable pouches and brush holders so you can use them for cosmetics, jewelry and toiletries. To read my article on packing makeup for travel click HERE.

I love my electric toothbrush but it cost $200.00 and if something happened to my luggage it would disappear as well. Instead I pack the Travel Sonic Toothbrush from Carry Clean which retails for just $19.99 with an extra replacement head. It uses 1 AAA battery (included in the kit) and comes with a snap-on cover to protect the brush. Although it looks small, it vibrates 32,000 times per minute to provide a better clean than a manual brush and it keeps teeth and gums healthy while you’re out enjoying exotic cuisine. I also recommend popping the Carry Clean Dental Travel Pack in your carry-on bag to freshen your breath after a long flight. It comes with a deluxe travel toothbrush + storage case, 7 dental picks and a mini Colgate toothpaste.

I don't know about you, but after a long flight my hair is a total mess (seriously I look like I've been electrocuted) so I always keep one of my stylish Tangle Teezer Travel Brushes ($25.00) on-hand to keep my mane smooth, sleek and neat.

Vacations are a good time to use all those skincare samples you’ve collected over the year and I never forget my Foreo Luna Play ($49.00) to deep cleanse, remove impurities and rinse away blemish causing bacteria.

These cute, reusable travel containers from Avon ($19.99) come in handy when you want to pack your favorite products without lugging around full-size bottles that weight down your suitcase.

My travel essentials list could go on-and-on since there are so many small comforts that make life easier while on the road. To read my article on tips for planning a great vacation – what every traveler should know, click HERE.

Travel Essentials from Farleyco Beauty!

As a jetsetter I am always on the lookout for travel friendly beauty essentials and since my suitcase has arrived at my destination without me and even ended up in another country I always make sure to pack a substantial carry-on to survive any mishaps.

Farleyco has some great products for your weekend getaway or dream holiday that are sure to come in handy. Have you ever opened your suitcase to find that your shampoo or conditioner has seeped out and made a total mess?! At 36,000 ft the pressure can expand your bottles so it’s handy to have minis, especially if you are only staying a few days and you don't care for the hotel brands. The Baylis & Harding products are inspired by fragrant English gardens and the travel size shampoo, conditioner and shower gels are only $1.99 each. You can also put the minis in a plastic baggie for your carry-on and the Sweet Grapefruit & Mandarin scent smells light, fresh and delectably fruity infused with aloe, castor oil and protein.

Hand santizer is a must when I travel and any time I leave home! This tiny bottle by X3 Clean gets rid of the majority of dirt and germs without the sting of alcohol and it conveniently fits in your pocket, purse or small clutch. I Love that the little tube has a spray nozzle for easy application and you can pick them up at Walmart, Shoppers Drug Mart, IDA Pharaprix and more! The 3 pack retails for $5.99.

To keep your toothbrush fresh and disinfected while you travel the Steripod toothbrush santizer is great! This little pod clips onto your brush and releases germ-killing vapours to sterilize for up to 3 months of protection! The 2 pack retails for $6.99.

If you’re having fun and jam-packing your days with activities you may not always have the time and energy to thoroughly wash your hair. The COLAB mini dry shampoo is fantastic for freshening up your roots, diminishing build-up and oil and giving your tresses a fresh, trendy scent. The nozzle blasts the cool, invisible formula directly onto the roots so you can toss, style and go. The 50 ml retails for $5.49.

I hate shaving but on vacation I hate it even more! With the Velvet Touch hair removal pads you can simply buff away unwanted hair in circular motions and exfoliate at the same time with no nicks or cuts. With these pink pads you don’t need water and you can ditch the saving cream and messy oils! Although the pads don’t remove every single hair, they do get rid of the majority of it for quick touch-ups. The box contains 3 pads and retails for $4.49.

The EcoTools Eye Perfecting Brush is a great multipurpose makeup essential for travel. The pointed, dense bristles help blend product under and around the eyes to help reduce the look of lines and smooth the skin. You can also use it to buff and blend eyeshadow, touch up blemishes and spots or place contour in the hollows of the cheeks. Although the bristles aren’t very plush it definitely gets the job done! The brush retails for $10.99.
