Some of my favourite things...

Awesome products
Here are some of my favourite products that I wanted to share with everyone. The prices I gave are approximations of what I purchase my products for but prices may vary depending on location.

Maybelline Baby Lips
This product claims to provide hydration to your lips and visibly renewed lips in 4 weeks. I love this lip balm. Not only is it creamy but it makes your lips feel soft and provides relief from dryness and harsh weather. For me one application lasts a long time and I love the cute packaging. The balms come in clear and a variety of subtle shades for those who want a slight tint. This product sells for aprox $3.96

I love this Macadamia Deep Repair Mask for hair. I did a lot of research on it before I purchased it because it cost $37.00 including tax here in Toronto which is a rather pricey for a small jar. It makes my hair feel very soft, light and silky and you only need very little product to achieve results. It also makes your hair smell very nice and is great for dry, damaged hair. Switching between this and the Nexxus Humectress deep conditioner every few days I think I found the two best conditioners I have ever used on my hair. This hair mask is made with argon oil, tea tree, chamomile, aloe and algae and it’s thick and extremely creamy. The product says it will revitalize and reconstruct your hair and sometimes spending the extra money is worth it if the product is
spectacular.
The Cortex Platinum Collection Black Series Flat Iron I love this flat iron. It has 100% ceramic plates that helps eliminate frizz and comes in a variety of colors including black, red and the pink-which I have. This flat iron boasts negative ion technology which helps stop the growth of bacteria and fungi resulting in a healthier scalp and hair. It is a Tourmaline flat iron that distributes heat across the hair evenly which acts to reduce heat damage. I also find that the plates glide easily through hair without pulling and snagging. Since I have started using this flat iron I can`t use any other. This flat iron sells for about $90.00 but I found mine at Winners for $39.99
The Schick Quattro For women Trim Style Razor: I got this razor as a gift and have been using it ever since. The razor has 4 blades and two pads that help moisturize and glide over the skin. It also has a pivoting head to help you glide effortless around your curves and comes in a variety of nice colors. I dislike disposable razors because they tend to be harsh on my skin and cut me easily. They also don`t give the best shave. This razor gives a close smooth shave and I love that it comes with a holster so you can keep the razor in its holder right in the shower. I also like that it has a handy little trimmer at the end that is battery operated. The refills are a bit expensive at $20.00 for 8 blades but the blades last a long time and because you don’t have to replace them as often it is worth the money. The razor itself cost about $11-13 dollars.
**quick tip: if you shave your legs with your hair conditioner in a hot steamy shower, the heat opens up the hair follicles allowing for a better shave and the hair conditioner leaves your skin incredibly
soft!

Dove Gentle Exfoliating Body Wash
This is my favourite body wash and believe me when I say I have tried them all! I love this body wash because I find that most bar soaps dries out my skin, and this body wash leaves my skin soft and clean. I also like that this product has exfoliating beads but my favourite thing about it is that it lathers like no other! With just a tiny drizzle on a bath puff this product foams up and engulfs you in suds. It also smells very fresh. It cost aprox $9-$10 for a large bottle.

Equate Cleansing Facial Towelettes:
I don’t really like taking off my makeup at the end of the day, but I know I have to, to maintain healthy skin. These facial towelettes are great at removing makeup and exfoliating your skin. I have been using them for years. You can buy the plastic container for about $6 and after that you can buy the refills for the container at about $9 for two packs at Walmart; there are 60 towelettes per pack.

St Ives Apricot Scrub:
To help maintain healthy skin it`s a good idea to exfoliate and St Ives Apricot Scrub is my favourite. The scrub comes in a few different textures in case you want a lighter exfoliate and have sensitive skin. It`s about $5-6 dollars a tube at Walmart.

Salley Hansen Air Brush Legs:
Very few of us have perfect skin, and sometimes we have a few imperfections that we want to smooth out. This product is great at giving you a more even tone on your legs. It comes in a variety of shades and doesn’t rub off on your clothes. It cost about $11 per can. You can get it at stores like Walmart, Target, The Bay and certain department stores in the pantyhose section.

Bath and Body Anti-Bacterial Hand Gel:
Hand sanitizers and gels have become quite popular these days in an effort to prevent the spread of germs and illness. I love having my Bath and Body Anti-Bacterial Gel in my purse in case I need to sanitize on the go. Some of the great features of this product are that it is small, compact and comes in a variety of scents that smell amazing! My favourite scent is Twilight Woods. They are $2 each at Bath and Body stores.

Dr. Scholl`s Fast Flats:
How many times have you worn the wrong shoes to a club, party or event that left your feet aching? These cute flats are a great solution. When I`m going out and wearing heels I always carry them in my purse just in case. They come with a small gold carrying case and they fold up so they don`t take up much room in your bag. Although I like these shoes, they are only to be worn in emergencies and not as regular shoes because the soles aren`t thick enough to provide adequate protection. They cost about $10 at Walmart. You can also get them at Shoppers Drug Mart and a variety of other stores.

Makeup Kaboodle:
If you are like me and love makeup kaboodles are a great way of organizing and storing your make up or nail polish. I got mine at Walmart for about $20 and they are great for taking all your makeup and products with you on short trips.

Coastal Scents 88 Shimmer Palate:
As I said I love makeup and changing up my look. This shimmer Palate is amazing because it gives you a gradient of colors with a wide range! If you buy this product you almost never have to buy eye shadow again. You can order it at

Faces Sparkle Dust:
These are my favourite eye shadows, I use them every day. My all time favourite being the gold sparkle dust number 2. This eye shadow gives you vibrant shades that go on very smooth. People always stop me and ask where I got my eye shadow and makeup and when they do this is the shadow I am usually wearing. Each individual eye shadow is about $10 and you can also buy a tower of eye shadows for $15-$25. The individual eye shadows last a long time, I`ve had mine for 3 years and I still have so much left! You can get them at the Faces store or Kiosks in selected malls in Canada.

Urban Decay Eye Shadow Primer:
I cannot put my eye shadow on without this amazing primer. Once you try this product I doubt you will be able to live without it either. It makes your eye shadow go on smooth, it makes it last a long time and not smudge or come off.  It also makes the color of the eye shadow more vibrant and standout. It is sold for about $20 but one tube will last a long time. You can purchase it at Sephora.

Revlon Color Stay Eyeliner:
This is a pencil eyeliner but it goes on nothing like regular pencil eyeliners. This eyeliner glides on smooth and give you strong bold lines. It`s comes with a built in sharpener which I never need because it twists to give you more so you don`t really need to sharpen it. It is also lasts a long time and doesn’t smudge. It cost about $11 At Walmart and Shoppers Drug Mart.

Loreal Voluminous False Lashes:
I love the look of thick beautiful lashes but I hate wearing false lashes because I find them uncomfortable and sometimes a bit heavy on my lids; so I was very happy when I found this mascara. I like that this products gives you a lot of length and has fibres that make your lashes look fuller giving you the appearances of false lashes. I apply several coats until I achieve my desired effect. It is sold for about $8

Spa Resource Body Butter:  I like to moisturize my skin and keep it healthy. I really enjoy the body butters from Spa Resource. They have larger sizes for use all over your body and also sell small compact sizes you can keep in the car or in your purse. The body butters are creamy and thick and really helps manage dry skin. They also come in a variety of scents that smell very tropical and fragrant. Prices vary depending on size, it costs about $1.50 for the small and $6 for the larger size, I believe this brand is owned solely by Walmart and can usually be found in the cosmetics section.

Wet n Wild Fast Dry Nail polish
I don`t like waiting around forever for my nail polish to dry so I only use the fast drying ones. These Wet n Wild polishes come in a large variety of colors and they dry fast and shiny. They also last quite a while when you use a no chip top coat. They sell for about $2.99 each
Studio Sculpt Foundation by MAC:  This is the foundation I use every day. I like that the foundation is lightweight but full coverage. It also contains SPF 15 to give your skin some added protection and when used with a face primer and a foundation brush it gives you a wonderfully flawless appearance. It cost about $35

Nexxus Humectress Deep Conditioner:
I know I have already spoken about this product but it is my favourite deep conditioner. It helps restore moisture and softness to my hair leaving it shiny and manageable. It also smells good and when I use it my hair feels rejuvenated. It`s about $13

Tresemme Heat Tamer Spray:
As I mentioned in my blog about hair care if you use heat styling tools it is imperative to have a good heat protectant. This is my favourite because it doesn’t leave a build up on my hair, it leaves my hair soft, it smells fantastic, and the spray nozzle distributes the products in a very effective mist. It`s also very cheap at about $3.96 per bottle

Chi Silk Infusion and Chi Keratin Mist:
I use both these products on my hair frequently and I like how they make my hair feel. They definitely add more shine and softness to the hair.
The Silk infusion is about $35 for the 300ml bottle and the keratin mist is about $11-12 dollars for the 300ml bottle you can get them at beauty supply stores and certain department stores.

Boar Bristle Brush:This is the only brush I use. It’s great at making your hair feel soft and silky and it helps distribute the natural oils which helps make your hair healthy. I got mine for about $12 at Winners by Organic Spa but you can get them at beauty supply stores

Hair Gear Advanced Two Conditioning and Hydrating Shampoo:
Those of you who know about Laureth Sulfate know that it is the detergent in most shampoos that allows the shampoo to foam and lather; but it is also the ingredient that strips the healthy natural oils from your hair leaving it dry and brittle. This shampoo is SULFATE FREE and is rich in organic botanicals. It offers UV protection as well as a list of wonderful ingredients such as: basil, chamomile, aloe, rosemary, wheat protein, keratin, jojoba oil, ginseng, primrose, lavender, biotin sage and the list goes on and on!! The shampoo helps to strengthen and condition damaged hair and leaves your hair feeling clean. You can purchase it at beauty supply stores and Winners.

Betsyville makeup bags:
These makeup bags by Betsy Johnson are really cute for taking makeup on the go. You can get them in all sizes, shapes and colors. I like the funky designs and bold patterns. I received mine as a gift so I`m not sure of the cost.

Pandora Charm Bracelet:
This bracelet is a great idea for a gift. I like that the charms are round and unobtrusive unlike many charm bracelets with the charms sticking out all over the place. It is also a gift that keeps on giving; you can buy a charm for special events and create a wonderful memories.

Skinny Girl Sangria:
For the last few get-togethers with my friends we have opted for this Sangria. It tastes good and it also has reduced calories so you don’t have to feel so guilty about enjoying a drink. It cost about $12 per bottle.

Perfumes:
I am just going to list some of the perfumes that I have been using and the scents that I favour. I like perfumes that smell good but aren`t too strong and overpoweringly sweet, floral or citrusy. I like a nice subtle scent and these are my favourites and the ones that I get tons of compliments on.

Armani Code

Friction fcuk

Betsey Johnson

Ed Hardy

Paris Hilton

Vera Wang, Princess

Bag Hook:
When you go out to dinner or for cocktails you can`t always find a convenient place for your purse. These bag hooks are great at hanging your bag right at the edge of a table and off the floor. They come in a variety of designs and prices.

Aquafina Plus Vitamins 10 Cal.
If you workout, and have an active lifestyle then it`s a good idea to keep hydrated. This water comes in flavours that taste good but also gives you the vitamins your body needs such as Vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin B5, B3, B6 and B12

Bath and Body Works Anti-Bacterial Hand Soap:
This is my favourite hand soap to have in my bathrooms. They smell amazing and they have tons of great scents with creamy anti-bacterial protection for your hands.

Kashi Granola Bars, dark chocolate coconut:

These are my favourite granola bars! They are made with natural wholesome ingredients and taste amazing. The chocolate and coconut is my favourite but there are other flavours that are also very good.

Heys Luggae:
I travel a lot so I need luggage that is durable, comes with a good warranty and looks nice. I love the Heys hard sided luggage for its durability and also the crafty wheels that swivel in all directions allowing you to pull the suit case with very little effort. The hard shell also helps protect your clothes from moisture and rain. The cost of this one was originally $239.99 but I got mine on sale at Sears for $110. The best time to buy luggage is when there is a sale you can save a considerable amount!

Bath salts are great for the skin! When you take a bath with your favorite bubble bath sprinkle some in the water & when you get out your skin feels amazing. Side note: when I travelled to the Caribbean & swam in the sea the natural salt water did some amazing things to my hair and skin! The salt and minerals from the salty Caribbean Sea acted as a natural conditioner leaving my hair and skin incredibly soft! So the next time you travel to the Caribbean get in the water and get your hair wet!

I love exfoliating gloves. When used in the shower with your favorite body wash they provide wonderful full body exfoliation.

Vaseline is not only great for dry lips, rashes or burns but it is also great for moisturizing the skin. It’s said that applying Vaseline to your lashes helps moisturize them so that they can grow longer and thicker. It`s also said that applying Vaseline around your cuticles before applying nail polish will help keep the nail polish from sticking to the skin around your nails. I like using it on my face at night, it makes my skin look great the next morning and doesn’t clog my pores.

Hair Care 101

Hair: Our Crowning Glory

Women spend countless hours fussing, curling and coloring their hair. We try new products, we spend lots of money at salons and we attempt numerous styles in hopes of getting our tresses looking healthy and stylish.

The women I know along with myself spend a lot of money on hair products that each claim to work a spectacular new miracle to replenish the damage caused by our flat irons, blow dryers and curling irons; while other women blindly go into big department stores and buy whatever is cheap and smells good.

When it comes to hair care every woman has an individual treatment plan that works for her, but we can all use helpful tips and gain some knowledge on products we aren’t familiar with. What works on one person’s hair may not work for another. In fact the hair type on one head can be a combination of many different nationalities and textures.

Before I go on I didn’t mean to exclude the men; men have hair concerns as well and this blog entry is a dedication to hair tips that have worked for me and may be worth trying yourself.

Personally my hair type is a bit difficult to define and label but I will try to explain what I’m working with. I come from an ethnically mixed family that includes West Indian (Caribbean), East Indian and Irish ethnicities. So my hair isn’t quite like any other hair type I have ever encountered. My hair is naturally curly, tight curls very soft and thick. When I flat iron my hair it is half way down my back, fine strands, soft and shiny. In the curly form my hair tends to be dry but while straight for long periods of time it becomes quite oily. I have never dyed or bleached my hair. I have never used any harmful chemicals on my hair. The only tools I do use on my hair are a flat iron aprox 2-3 times per month and occasionally a curling iron a few times per year. Below are two pictures so you can see what my hair looks like.

I’m going to list some helpful hair tips for those of you who have dryness, breakage, or damaged hair. Even those who just need a little extra softness, body, bounce and shine may benefit from some of these tips.

Listed are some tools that can help you work towards rejuvenating your hair and regaining that  healthy shine we all desire.

*Not all of these techniques or products will work for everyone, sometimes trial and error or trial and success is the only way to know what will work for you.

Hair Care tips:

*Try to wash your hair as little as possible, 1-2 times per week:
Excessive washing can strip the natural oils from your hair leaving it dry and brittle. You can also try co-washing, or washing your hair with a hydrating conditioner instead of a shampoo.

This rule isn’t set in stone; people who have active lifestyles and go to the gym or partake in physical activity like me may need to wash their hair more often. In this case try to do deep conditioning treatments to help seal in moisture and use a very good shampoo such as those that do not contain harsh chemicals like sulphates, parabens and waxes.

*Limit the use of heat styling tools, or use the lowest heat setting possible to achieve your style.

*Allow hair to air dry if you have the time rather than blow drying. If you do have to blow dry use the cool setting.

*Always use a heat protectant before using styling tools on your hair

*Keep hair moisturized especially if the ends tend to be dry and split. You can use serums or oils for this.

*Do weekly scalp massages to improve circulation to hair follicles

*Do a deep conditioning treatment at least once per week. You can also try putting the deep conditioner on the hair, placing a plastic cap over the hair and applying heat with a blow dryer for 5-10 mins. The heat allows the hair follicles to open up and absorb the benefits of the conditioner.

*Always do a final rinse with cold water to help seal in the benefits of the conditioner and avoid washing hair with hot water as it can be damaging

*Use natural oils such as coconut or argon oil before you wash your hair (leave in overnight if possible) (note: make sure the coconut oil is 100% coconut oil non- hydrogenated. Coconut oil should be the ONLY ingredient listed!) I use the Organic Virgin Coconut oil.

*sleep on a silk or satin pillow case or with a silk/satin head scarf to avoid breakage and damage while sleeping and make sure to get enough sleep. Hair tends to grow when the body is healthy and well rested.

*Do not brush and handle your hair excessively and avoid brushing hair when wet

*Use a boar bristle brush when brushing your hair.
I find that using this brush helps make your hair incredibly soft and helps to spread natural oils throughout the hair.

*For tangled hair use a wide tooth comb.
It can also help to comb hair while the conditioner is in. Begin combing from the ends up and gently pick out tangles.
*If you have naturally curly hair DO NOT comb or brush your hair when it is dry, it will cause damage.

*Always use shampoos that do not strip your hair of natural oils.
One way to tell if your shampoo is doing this is by paying attention to how your hair feels after the shampoo. If hair feels brittle, fragile and rough chances are the shampoo is not good for your hair. Try a shampoo that is sulphate and paraben free.

*Always condition after shampooing hair. Use thick creamy conditioners or deep conditioners.

 *Drink lots of water

*If your hair is dry and breaking wear protective styles as you treat it. Keeping your hair up and off of your shoulders will reduce the friction against clothing.

*Try to maintain a healthy diet that includes vegetables, fruits and protein.

*Certain vitamins are geared towards healthy hair. Vitamins that contain Silica or Vitamin B such as biotin can be helpful.

 *Try to exercise regularly

*Try to avoid tying your hair up tightly, this can cause your hair to break and recede. Try and use hair bands that are easy to get out and that don’t rip the hair when you take them out. Never use things like rubber bands in your hair. BE GENTILE with your hair.

*Try to color your hair less. Also avoid harmful chemicals like bleach, dye and relaxers all together if possible. (I have never used any dyes or chemicals on my hair)

*Use a finishing product on your hair that won’t leave a build up but will give you a shiny finish and help with dryness

*Trim split ends with PROFESSIONAL scissors, scissors meant for cutting hair and get regular trims.

*When you do use heat styling tools make sure they are of good quality. Try to use 100% ceramic heat tools. Avoid using ceramic plated irons or clothing irons ect.  Try to avoid holding heating tools on the hair for a long time.

*Protect your hair from UV rays in the summer; use a leave in conditioner, a shampoo with UV protection or a heat protectant spray.

*Use products that are geared towards your hair type, whether you have dry, oily, chemically treated or dyed hair. Using extremely nourishing conditioners on oily hair will make it oilier.

*Dry wet hair gently. Vigorous rubbing with a towel only causes more damage; gently squeeze the hair with a towel and air dry.

 Let’s talk products

I have used too many products to even list! But one way of knowing for sure if something works on your hair is to TRY it. So let’s just say I have tried many of the products that are on the market and I’ll tell you which ones I like the most.

Shampoos and Conditioners
I have used many shampoos, from popular department store brands to brands that have all natural ingredients and brands in all price ranges.

Some of my favourite are:

 *Nexxus Humectress Deep Conditioner.
This is one of my most recent finds and I love this conditioner. It left my hair feeling revitalized, soft and silky. Many of the reviews claim that this deep conditioner helped restore badly dyed and chemically treated hair. It reportedly works wonders on people who have damage from heat styling tools and hair breakage and personally it worked very well for me. It is about $14 dollars for a relatively small jar but it is worth the money.

*Nexxus Pro Mend Shampoo and Conditioner
These products are really good at making your hair feel and look healthy and shiny. At about $14 dollars per bottle you get softer hair and less split ends and breakage.

*Macadamia Deep Repair hair mask
I did a lot of research before I purchased this product because it cost $37.00 including tax in Toronto which is rather pricey for a small jar. It makes my hair feel soft, light & silky & you only need very little to achieve results. It also makes my hair smell very nice and is great for repairing dry, damaged hair. Most people see a difference in their hair after the first usage and it can be used in combination with the Macadamia shampoo and oil treatment for even better results. Although I like this deep conditioner I find that the Nexxus Humectress Deep Conditioner works just as well and is a fraction of the price.

*Loreal Ever Crème Intense Nourishing Shampoo - I have been searching for a sulphate free shampoo that I liked and I definitely like this one. The texture of this shampoo is so creamy that it feels more like a conditioner and it contains no harsh salts or coating waxes. It also contains Omega 3and6 and  natural botanicals.

*Mixed Chicks Deep Conditioner
I found this conditioner to be very good at making my hair softer and less dry. They sell it at beauty supply stores and outlets for about $13-$15 (and no you don’t have to have mixed hair to use this conditioner.)

*Mixed Chicks Leave in Conditioner
This product is for people who have naturally curly hair and want to wear their hair curly without the frizz and dryness. This leave in conditioner helps to tame curls and keep them in place. It says on the bottle that it is a ``curl defining formula, whether you`re Black, White, Asian, Latin, Mediterranean you`ll love the way this non- sticky light weight product leaves your hair inviting to the touch.``  It is sold at beauty supply stores and outlets for about $13

*Poya Organics Rosemary Mint Conditioner
This product is made with all natural ingredients and although the smells from the herbs are very strong and minty it makes your hair super soft and silky, you can feel the difference as soon as you put it on! It is enriched with 100% pure essential oils and botanical extracts. This product is sold by a Canadian company but you can order online at:

http://www.newdirectionsaromatics.ca/poya-rosemary-mint-conditioner-p-1857.html

*Dove Damage Therapy Intensive Repair Shampoo and Conditioner
These products claim to reduce split ends up to 95% and help restore damaged hair. Although I needed more than this shampoo and conditioner to help with split ends and breakage it is a very good line of products and it smells fantastic. It is also affordable at about $6.96 per bottle and can be found almost anywhere  hair products are sold.

*Dove Nourishing Oil Care Shampoo and Conditioner
These products are great for people who need to nourish dry hair with light weight oils. This line claims to make hair shiny and soft while reducing frizz up to 80%.  I liked this shampoo and conditioner and I think it would be great for summer when humidity can make hair frizzy and a bit harder to manage. It is about $6 per bottle

*Pantene Breakage to Strength Shampoo and Conditioner Medium to Thick
This shampoo and conditioner not only smells good but it is also affordable at about $6.00 per bottle. The conditioner leaves your hair feeling nice and soft. It works to strengthen hair against damage and help prevent split ends. I’d suggest that you adhere to some of the other hair care tips listed above and use them along with this line in order to see results.

*Dark and Lovley Healthy Gloss 5 Shampoo and Conditioner
I found that the Dark and Lovely shampoo did not strip my hair at all; in fact it made it feel softer, like I had just conditioned it. The conditioner also works well and for about $5 a bottle it’s a steal. The products are made with satin oil and helps restore the 5 signs of healthy hair:
1.Moisture 2.Shine 3.Strength  4.Softness  5.Body and offers 5x more conditioning.

*Herbal Essence Hello Hydration conditioner
This conditioner gives your hair a healthy dose of hydration and moisturizer to help combat dry damaged hair. It is infused with Orchid and coconut milk and can be found anywhere hair products are sold for about 6 dollars.

*Aussie 3 Minute Miracle Deep Conditioner
This deep conditioner sells for just over three dollars and is great at making your hair soft and shiny. I have never seen this particular product here in the Greater Toronto Area so you may have to get it when you go across the border to the US.

*Pantene Curly Hair Series Dry to Moisturized Conditioner
If you have curly hair and you need a great detangling conditioner that leaves your curls bouncy and soft then this conditioner is great. You can find it anywhere hair products are sold for about 5 dollars.

 *Tresemme Spit Remedy Conditioner
This conditioner claims to reduce the split ends up to 80% in just 3 uses and smooth the appearance of hair. Although nothing can permanently fix the hair once it has split this conditioner claims to help reduce and prevent split ends from occurring not to mention it leaves dry hair very soft and smelling wonderful for days! You can purchase a bottle for about 6 dollars.

*Vatika Deep Conditioner and Hot oil Treatment
This deep conditioner also works as a hot oil treatment. It is infused with henna, olive oil and almond oil for a deep repair conditioning treatment. You can purchase a tub at your local Indian grocery store in the hair product section. I do not care for the smell of this product even though it works well; it smells like very strong incense so when I wash it out I apply another conditioner just to wash out some of the smell.

Treatments:

*Aussie Insurance Leave in Treatment
This leave in conditioner claims to repair and restore not so healthy hair. It is a spray leave in conditioner that adds moisture to your hair before styling or extra hold for your curls and helps repair dry damaged hair. You can get it for just over 3 dollars.

*Aveno Active Naturals Nourish+Condition Leave in Treatment
This treatment is a conditioning treatment that has been tested and proven to repair the health of damaged hair. It is safe for color treated hair and does wonders to make your hair replenished, soft and shiny. You can get it for just over 6 dollars.

 *Garnier Fructis Triple Nutrition Spray
This spray is a detangler and leave in conditioning treatment all in one. It is made with three fruit oil extracts to nourish and repair the hair. You can get it for just over 4 dollars.

*Chi Silk infusion: silk reconstructing complex, enriched with pure silk along with wheat and soy proteins that penetrate the hair strengthening and leaving the hair soft shiny and manageable.

*Chi Keratin Mist strengthening treatment- leave in strengthening treatment

*Tresemme Heat Tamer Spray- minimizes heat damage, guards against heat and friction to help keep your hair shiny and soft.

*Pure coconut oil: note –coconut oil is solid in its natural form. To melt it put some in your palm and rub your palms together allowing the friction from your hands to melt the oil. I .find that it you microwave the oil before applying it to your hair it causes your hair to become frizzy. For me the coconut oil helped with dryness, breakage and split ends.

*Argon oil

*Olive oil Heat Protectant Serumnote: I find that with the cheaper shampoos and conditioners such as Dove and Pantene you need to adhere to the hair care tips as well as do regular oil and deep conditioning treatments for best results.
note: prices of products may vary depending on retailers and location)

Styling Tools:
*The Edge Ahead hair cutting kit -helps deal with my split ends. We all know that split ends can make your hair weak, tangled and prone to breakage so it’s important to keep them trimmed using professional scissors. This kit comes with stainless steel shears, a cutting comb, 2 hair clips and a shampoo cape, you can get it at Sally's for about $14

*Hair bands with no metal- You can find these hair ties at Walmart, they have no metal parts so they do not get caught in your hair and cause damage.

* Cortex Platinum Black Series flat iron- this flat iron has very good quality ceramic plates and doesn`t snag and break the hair as much as some other irons.

*Revlon ceramic curling iron (thin)-This curling iron was inexpensive, is easy to use and curls my hair in a short amount of time.

*Boar bristle brush

Nina’s Gelateria and Pastry Shop, Niagara on the lake

If you are ever spending the day in Niagara Falls the Clifton Hill area is not the only place you can go for great desserts.
Niagara on the lake also has many restaurants to choose from as well as shops, parks and picnic areas.
On my last visit to Niagara on the lake I stopped in at Nina’s Gelataria and Pastry shop. At Nina’s not only is all the gelato made in house but it also contains no artificial colors, flavours or preservatives. The gelato is sweet, creamy and the flavours are very bold and fresh. I had the amanrena cherry gelato and the rum raisin.

Scone (frm my camera)
I also had a deliciously soft blueberry white chocolate scone which was the best scone I have had to date. The scone was moist and cake like with large chucks of blueberry and chocolate.

Nina’s also serves sandwiches, cookies, pastries including cookies and fresh espresso and coffee.
So the next time you visit The Niagara Falls area venture down to Niagara on the lake and stop in at Nina’s.

The Sicilian Sidewalk Cafe, College Street

Taste of Little Italy Festival June 18th 2011

This year I attended the Taste of Little Italy festival that was held on College Street in Toronto. The weather was perfect. There was music, entertainment, games for the kids, and lots of food. I love Italian food and after much debate about which patio to have lunch at we finally decided on The Sicilian Sidewalk Cafe. Although most of the menu is geared towards rich mouth watering desserts, they also have a few other items on the menu to choose from and the patio offers a nice view of the streets activities.

I ordered the grilled chicken panini with mayo, lettuce, roasted peppers and provolone cheese for $6.50. The sandwich was large, filling and very good, although I would have preferred a  bit more flavour on the chicken breast itself.

I also had some Sicilian ice cream and gelato which comes in a variety of delectable flavours. This is a great place to go to for dessert, to have a beer, and spend an afternoon on the patio!

Restaurant Blog: Raddica's Hot and Spicy Doubles

The Flavour of Trinidad
By: Erica Davis
June 8th, 2011

Toronto is a bustling metropolis that is infused with multiculturalism and diversified traditions and with this comes an abundance of flavours. Toronto has a substantial population from the West Indies, and West Indian culture is incorporated into our cities lively summer festivals with such events as the annual jerk fest and the colourfully popular Caribana festival now known as The Scotia Bank Caribbean Festival.

Trinidad is an island that gives us calypso music, carnival and a wide variety of tasty foods that are infused with African, Indian, Chinese, Spanish and Amerindian influences. If you haven’t tried a doubles, aloo pie or curry chicken roti then you are missing out on an array of spicy bold flavours that dance on the taste buds and will have you going back for seconds.

While sampling from many different Trinidadian restaurants I look for key ingredients to satisfy my experienced taste buds and bring out the authenticity of Trinidadian food. When I bite into a delectable roti I want images of my grandmother standing over the stove kneading dough and mixing spices to resurface to my mind in a nostalgic yet tempting memory causing my mouth to water. For Trinidadian families food is an important factor that nourishes family bonds and is central to any major event. Although I was born and raised in Canada the Trinidadian culture and strong roots were passed down to me through traditions and food. I would often hear of the large gatherings that are custom in Trinidad where families and friends gather at a river or park and have a huge feast of a variety of homemade Trinidadian food. In Toronto many Trinidadian families still carry on these traditions passing on recipes for generations.

A great place to get authentic tasting Trinidadian cuisine at an affordable price is a small restaurant located in Brampton called Raddica’s  Hot and Spicy Doubles. This small gem is tucked away at the corner of Torbram and Steeles and has a loyal following of regular customers that can no doubt attest to the restaurants smooth, simplistic Caribbean vibe and chutney music; which is music that is infused with Indian and calypso rhythm and lyrics.

Doubles (frm my camera)
On my visit to Raddica’s I decided to purchase one of Trinidad’s most popular foods, doubles. A doubles resembles the Trinidadian version of a sandwich, it consists of two pieces of bara (a fried bread made from flour and peppered with turmeric). In between these golden pieces of bara is a nice helping of chana (curried chick peas in a curry sauce with some spicy chutney).
Admittedly I am a huge fan of a good doubles and have consumed a hearty amount of doubles in my days, but Raddica’s doubles are scrumptiously soft, the chick peas are perfectly curried and complimented with the spicy chutney and they only cost $1.50 each . There is no meat in this dish but with such titillating scrumptious flavours you don’t miss it. Vegetarians will find it to be a meal that surpasses the blandness of less creative veggie dishes, entering the realm of great tasting cuisine. To be on the safe side I’d suggest ordering your doubles with either no pepper or slight pepper because when you ask for hot you may be biting off more than you can chew, Raddica’s homemade Trinidadian style pepper sauce is extremely hot and has the ability to set your mouth on fire. Doubles also comes with a variety of other fillings including curry shrimp and goat.

Chicken roti (frm my camera)
Another popular dish that Raddica’s prepares to perfection is the curry chicken boneless roti, which is also the national dish of Trinidad. The roti is called dhalpuri roti which is flour dough that is stuffed with ground yellow split peas, cumin, garlic and pepper and then the dough is rolled flat and cooked on a flat iron cooking surface called a tava. The roti is stuffed with curried chicken, potatoes and chana and folded so it is easier to eat. The rotis at Raddica’s are flavourful and large. The chicken is tender and seasoned well; the chunks of potato are also blended into the curry making the meal quite filling. The roti is moist and becomes saturated with the spicy curry sauce which is delectable. If you aren’t in the mood for chicken you can always try your roti stuffed with shrimp or curry goat. The roti cost $8.99 and will have you leaving satisfied.

Although Raddica’s sells soft drinks and familiar beverages, if you want to experience something a bit different I’d recommend the peanut punch. Peanut punch is a creamy, sweet, peanut flavoured drink that is popular in Trinidadian cuisine. Raddica’s sells this delicious drink in juice box size. Sipping on cool peanut punch during you meal is like not having to wait for desert.

Kurma (frm my camera)
If you want to finish off your meal with something sweet to balance out all the spicy flavours try the kurma. Kurma is a sweet that was derived from East India and made its way over into the Trinidadian culture. It is made with dough that is cut into rectangular pieces, deep fried and coated in sugary syrup. Biting into the crisp sweet kurma sticks reminded me of a harder version of funnel cake pastry. The kurma is sold per bag for $2.00 and is a wonderful finale to a savoury meal.

Based on my positive experience at Raddica’s I give this restaurant a rating of 4/5 based on overall taste and price. The only downfall I found was in relation to the decor; although the restaurant has a very casual dine-in experience in a very small area, newer tables, chairs and decor modernization would be a nice adjustment.

If you are looking for a tasty meal then try Raddica’s Hot and Spicy Doubles, for an authentic Trinidadian experience.

Restaurant Blog: Lahore Tikka House

Tented patio (frm my camera)
Looking for some great restaurants in Toronto this summer? Try Lahore Tikka House on 1365 Gerrard Street East Toronto. You won’t find anything fancy at Lahore as you dine on plastic chairs, tables and picnic benches but what you will find is tasty authentic Indian cuisine. If you like Indian food then you should definitely try Lahore; the prices are reasonable and the tented patio decorated with colourful sari fabrics only adds to the overall experience. Not only are the waiters friendly and hospitable but the food arrives incredibly fast and always simmering hot.
This is by far the best Indian restaurant I have ever been to in the GTA  even though I have to drive into the  busy downtown area to get there. The food is always well worth the trip and the restaurant is always teeming with people as Lahore's fan base continues to grow.

The ordering process is a bit strange, you have to mark down what dish you want directly on the menu and then head over to the cashier to place your order. You are then given a number which you must place on your table before your food is brought to you. At the end of your meal you must again make your way to the cahier to pay for your meal. Although it seems a bit redundant somehow the waiters manage to keep track with impeccably prompt service, and the food is well worth the hassle!

Thus far I have been satisfied with everything I have ordered which includes the biryani vegetable rice, the chicken biryani and the chicken tikka biryani. I have also tried the butter chicken, the mango lassi and the tea. My favourite by far are the chicken or beef kebabs with the regular or garlic butter nan bread.
