Bioderma Sensibio Collection & Tolerance Plus Moisturizer

If you suffer from sensitive skin removing layers of pore clogging makeup or finding moisturizers that work with your flare-ups can be a challenge. My skin is usually clear and quite tolerant of most products I test but I have experienced irritation caused by certain cleansers and creams.

Most adverse skin reactions occur when I travel; the drying air during a long flight usually causes the production of excess oil and combined with makeup, fatigue, foreign environmental climates/sweltering heat, water quality and other factors I have a difficult time maintaining a clear complexion as I jet set around the globe. I’ve painstakingly dealt with it all from sudden breakouts in Hawaii, heat rash in Jamaica, extreme redness and itching during a Caribbean cruise to annoying sunburn and irritation. About a week ago while touring the South of France I decided I’d had enough so I brought along the Sensibio Tolerance+ to help neutralize hypersensitivity, calm, smooth, nourish and moisturize my finicky vacation-skin.

This lightweight cream is ideal for summer and it lightly hydrates with a scent-free formula void of parabens, preservatives and colorants which also works with allergy prone skin. In just 15 minutes it calms hyperactive nerves to decrease tingling, elevate the tolerance threshold and diminish tightness and discomfort for long-lasting results. I also like that it provides a thin, supple layer of hydration that is suitable for use under makeup and hot summer days although you still need sunscreen for UV protection. The cream creates a protective barrier against the elements that usually disrupt my complexion so I was able to get on with my trip with clear skin!  The moisturizer retails for $26.95.

I recently reviewed the popular Sensibio H2O Micelle Solution (below), which I’ve been loving but there is another fabulous rinse-free, hypoallergenic formula for sensitive, dehydrated skin.

The Hydrabio H2O solution also eradicates stubborn makeup, dirt and excess oil with non-drying gentleness safe for the entire face! It soaks off crunchy mascara, waterproof makeup and heavy foundation without burning and it has the great absorbing effects of a toner without harsh alcohols. This solution offers an extra blast of hydration for thirsty skin that craves moisture, it retails for $19.95.

Like the other products above the 3-in-1 Cleansing Milk is formulated for sensitive skin to tone, remove eye makeup and thoroughly clean the face without rinsing. It also helps strengthen skin’s resiliency against environmental stressors and increases the tolerance threshold for irritability. If you prefer a creamy consistency over the water-like, refreshing formula of the Micelle Solution then this cleanser may be preferable. It softens skin and emulsifies makeup and bold pigments making them easier to wipe-off. The Milk retails for $18.95.

For more info on these great products visit: Bioderma.ca, you can also find them at Murale, Shoppers Drug Mart and various drug stores across Canada. Check out the makeup wipes- HERE.

Sally Hansen Triple Shine Nail Color Review: Summer Shades

Summer calls for fun colors, bright manis and cute pedis with an ultra glossy effect for high impact nails! The Triple Shine polishes by Sally Hansen are available in 29 stunning hues that standout in the summer sun. They are also available in a playful range of finishes including: solid shimmer, glitter and interesting holographic shapes.

left: Redflection, Middle: Water Lily Right: Watts New

The rich, creamy formula applies opaquely in 2 coats with natural crushed pearl and a durable shield complex for protection. The brilliant, glossy polish is also water resistant so you can go from the gym to the pool while your nails dazzle through the wear and tear of everyday.

The trendy shades I have are: 450 Watts New (deep, velvety plum), 165 Water Lily (pink/purple orchid) and my favorite- 440 Redflection (berry-red). The durability of the formula is pretty good when paired with a decent, chip-resistant topcoat giving me at least a few days wear before having to retouch.

Redflection

The large brush applies the polish in a few easy strokes making the process quicker although you do have to be careful of pooling. The outer cap is a tad annoying because it pops off as I open the bottle revealing a second cap underneath that also needs to be twisted off but this is a small price to pay for striking color!

You can pick up these polishes at most drug stores including Walmart, Shoppers Drug Mart, Jean Coutu, Rexall and London Drugs for $4.49-$4.99.

Mary Kay Spring/Summer Collection: Fun, Fabulous Makeup!

If you could sum up the aura of summer in a vibrant collection of brilliant hues and textures it would be the new cosmetic range by Mary Kay! These vivid pigments will keep you fashionable all season long and inspire countless trendy styles from warm and smouldering to fresh and subtle.

The Mary Kay at Play range is my favorite within the brand because the products are youthful, fun, edgy and modern! The Baked Eye Trios are available in 3 ravishing compacts including- Out of the Blue (blue, bronzy green and gold), Purple Eclipse (silver, black and purple) and Neapolitan (champagne, coppery bronze and pink).

The domed colors are expertly grouped to complement each other which make them easy to use and great for travel. All of the shades except for the black have a lovely shimmer- metallic finish that accentuates the eyes and blends well. I prefer applying them over primer to amp-up the intensity but the color payoff is wonderful even without a base and they don’t crease or fade!

Neapolitan

Out Of The Blue

Purple Eclipse

The smooth pigments apply consistently for even coverage with little fall-out and a lot of glam! The trios retail for $14.00 each and they are simply fabulous!

Gloss-up with confidence and juicy hydration with the new Jelly Lip tubes! These sheer shimmery beauties drench lips in a layer of moisture with a supple wet finish and a touch of shimmer. If you take a closer look at the formula you can make out tiny bubbles which melt into a non-sticky, radiant coat of glossy goodness! The two colors available are Jamin’ Berry and Glow With It- a clear formula that adds a touch of sparkle to bare lips or luminous highlight when layered on top of your favorite lipsticks.

Recently I’ve been on the hunt for some vivid blush to jazz up my summer wardrobe and the Mineral Cheek Color Duos are exactly what I've been looking for! Each compact has a rich matte pigment plus a peralized highlight shade suitable for all complexions. The blush is also very buildable so you can go from sheer to bold for stunning color that lasts all day!

Although I would have preferred fancier packaging the subtle highlight hues create a healthy glow and the pigments brighten and revive dull complexions. The duos retails for $20.00 each.

Juice Guava & Spiced Poppy

Ripe Watermelon

Continuing with the fabulous duos trend I have to talk about the shadow and liner crayons because they are so darn cute! Usually I am a bit weary when it comes to pencil, cream or liquid eyeshadow but these are decent. The color glides on effortlessly with a creamy, smooth texture, soft finish and a shimmery-metallic effect.

Left to right: Iced Lilac (with purple liner), Rebel Rose (with black liner), Mint to be (with dark green liner), Carmellow (with bronze liner)

The colors layer quite well and I didn't have any issues with creasing, heaviness or stickiness which is common among cream formulas. Adjacent to the twist up crayon is a complimentary eyeliner that looks quite large but is actually very easy to use for a variety of looks. The formula of the liner is also very creamy which is great for application but not so great for smudge-proof results and longevity. They also contain a touch of glitter which may be a bit much when paired with shimmery eyeshadow but they do look nice on or just below the lower lash line. Matte, waterproof liners would have been more usable for summer but these are still quite fun to play around with and they retail for $15.00 each.

Shadow & liner swatches

The packaging of the limited edition Nourish Plus Shine lip glosses are super cute with a tantalizing swirl of Mary Kay’s most popular shades! Create Change is a combination of CafĂ© Au Lait and Cream & Sugar while In Harmony is a swirl of Pink Sateen and Berry Tart with brilliant gold highlight. The gloss is non-sticky, simple, sheer and sweet.

You can apply the shades individually or mix them together for a nice blend but eventually the cool design does fuse into one solid shade. Both glosses have a very rich texture to deeply moisturize parched lips with a layer of creamy protection. Until August 15th $1 of all sales will be donated to help change the lives of women and children in Canada. The gloss retails for $18.00 each.

If you love a good multipurpose beauty product then the nifty little lip & cheek sticks may be just what your makeup bag needs this summer. Available in two great shades these lush pigments twist-up and glide-on easy for a flawless flush and kissable lips. Razzleberry is a pretty plum-pink hue that is great for all skin tones and Peach Pop is a bright coral that you can apply directly from the tube or pat on with a finger. The colors apply sheer to full coverage depending on how much you use and since you don’t need a brush they are great for travel. You can pick them up for $12.00 each.

Because the formula is so creamy when used as blush I recommend a translucent setting powder.

You can pick up these great products at Marykay.ca or through independent consultants.

Purminerals Secret Crush Eye shadow Palette Review

Purminerals has been hitting it out of the park with their gorgeous eye shadows and the Soul Mattes Palette is one I've been using daily for contouring and defining my everyday looks. Not only are the textures luxurious, the quality is fantastic with no creasing or fading even in the summer heat!

This crush worthy palette has 8 ultra chic shades that are ideal for everyday looks; in fact I wear these warm hues most frequently as they compliment my outfits and most shades of lipstick. What I love most is that the finishes are expertly crafted for use. When palettes have too much shimmer and not enough matte for balance you can end up with more glam than you bargained for. This palette also includes shimmer-free brown and black for deepening the crease and a pretty cream color that makes a wonderful brow highlight.

The shimmer shades include hues that are consistently trendy including rose gold, and three other gold-bronze hues that compliment all complexions. I do think a bit more color variation would have been a nice touch but I am definitely pleased with the velvety texture and ease of application. The palette is also great for travel and since it is suitable for both day and night I don't have to pack any other shadows.

The rich smoothness and high impact pigmentation makes it easy to enhance the colors and the coverage is excellent! You can go from a sheer wash of luminous shimmer to golden goddess with the swipe of a brush and although primer is not required to intensify the beautiful, satiny-metallic finish it does increase the vibrancy. The compact also comes with a rather large eye shadow brush which is a tad bulky for the eyes but still does a decent job at patting on color and blending. It retails for $35.00.

I haven’t had much luck when it comes to marker-like lip products because the finish is usually very drying and sets into the texture of lips. Although the Pout Pen Lip Stain and Hydrating Balm Duo does have a pointed marker tip the effect isn't as flat and the other side has a translucent balm for a boost of moisture.

I like the fruity apricot, peach scent and Fuzzy Navel is a pretty coral which is totally trendy for the season. The felt applicator is easy to use and the shape helps contour and outline the lips. When worn without the balm the stain has good staying power and a very subtle flush loaded with nutritive vitamin C. When you slather the balm on top the texture of the stain transforms into more of a cream and becomes susceptible to transferring and smudging.

The stain applies very lightweight and the sheer, color is tinted beautifully for a pouty, juicy finish that is natural and comfortable. It retails for $21.00 and is available in an array of delectable hues.

You can find Purminerals exclusively at Shoppers Drug Mart

Loreal OleoTherapy Sulfate-Free System Review

For those who love the healing, nutritive benefits of luxurious oils the OleoTherapy system by Loreal will help keep your tresses bouncy and tame during your summer expeditions in chlorine pools, salty oceans and under harsh UV rays. It also works fabulously when the drying winter winds strike making it a treatment that protects your locks all year round!

I am no stranger when it comes to Loreal’s sulfate-free collections, in fact I have been using the Intense Nourishing range for years and the shampoo is by far my favorite! The products work wonders for me because they don’t contain harsh cleansing agents that strip hair and remove all the beneficial, natural oils that reinforce and protect. For those trying to repair dry, splitting, brittle hair or recuperate from coloring and heat damage, mild cleansers help maintain resiliency without further breakage. The Oleo range is also void of harsh salts and parabens.

The products in this line are infused with natural botanicals and 6 flower oils that replenish and help rough, frail hair fibers recover their natural health and shine. Although the shampoo is sulfate-free it thoroughly eliminates stubborn product build-up and lathers well to refresh and clean.

The Oleo Shampoo provides more of a squeaky clean compared to the EverCream products which actually soften after shampooing but this one gets the job done without  much moisture loss. The scent is very warm and pleasant without a heavy perfume aroma and the oils in the formula don’t linger or create a thick coating.

The conditioner helps restore that coveted silky texture we all aim for with a blast of rich creamy hydration. I like that it covers every strand making detangling a breeze! I usually apply the conditioner from my ears down, comb and then pin my hair up while continuing my shower. Rinsing just before I step out gives the lush formula extra time to heat up in the steam and penetrate more efficiently for a deeper treatment. After use my hair looks healthier, feels softer and more moisturized. The line also includes a deep recovery mask which I have yet to try.

To enhance the effects of the treatment process the self-heating hot oil is a great addition to your weekly, biweekly or monthly hair maintenance routine depending on how often you need it. Each box comes with 4 ampoules that instantly warm up to nourish damaged hair prior to cleansing and conditioning or as a pre-shampoo treatment as I prefer. The oil has a light texture and upon application my hair feels instantly replenished and improved! The directions instruct that you leave it on for 1-3 mins although I usually let it soak in for about 20-30 mins, cover my hair with a plastic cap and apply heat from my blow dryer as the oil tends not to warm up very much on its own. Although you can rinse the oil out with just water I prefer to do it before shampooing so that it washes out completely and I can apply the leave-in oil without overdoing it with product.

The Perfecting Oil is also non-greasy and adds the finishing touches to all your fabulous styles. It can be applied to wet or dry hair and helps soften and protect with a luminous, shiny finish. You can use it to smooth flyaways, tame frizz and improve texture and it works great after flat ironing for a sleek effect. For curly hair it helps neaten unruly spirals and works well with other leave-in products. I like that the formula isn’t heavy or sticky and just 1-2 pumps is usually all I need!

The shampoo and conditioner retail for about $9.99 and the treatments are about $14.99. You can find the system at drugstores and mass market retailers across Canada.

Summer Beauty Essentials & Beach Bag Must-Haves!

In celebration of warm weather, delicious patio lunches, sandy beach days and picnics in the park I have put together a collection of some of my favorite summer essentials. Whether you plan on spending some time in the Caribbean or lounging at the cottage with a good book sun protection, radiant skin and makeup that holds up in the heat will keep you on top of your game this season.

During the summer I usually do a lot of travelling, from Dubai, Paris, Spain, Italy and Hawaii, I love exploring! The My Tagalong travel organizer is available in trendy colors and keeps your essentials neat and stylish as you battle tiresome airport lines.

The handy compartments secures your passport and travel documents including: boarding pass, baggage receipts, pen and hotel confirmation. I recently used it in the South of France and the chic pink folder slipped into my purse and carry-on for easy access keeping my valuables safe without having to struggle with loose papers. It retails for $12.00 and you can visit the website by clicking- HERE.

Avon Sun + Broad Spectrum SPF 40 is water resistant, lightweight and oil-free to protect your face against excessive heat.  I try to avoid sun damage, premature aging and sun burn so on days spent outdoors I go with a high UV spectrum and something moisturizing and light enough to wear under makeup. (retail prize $12.99)

If you do forget to slather on or reapply the sunscreen then you might need the Dermalogica After Sun Repair. This lightweight gel cools skin on contact to help treat damage from exposure to UV sunlight. It also reduces irritation induced by sunburn and can even be used after waxing and hair removal to soothe and calm. It is safe for the face and body with natural ingredients like cucumber, aloe, algae, fruit and flower extracts compatible with sensitive skin. (Retail price $45.00)

Picnics and patios may seem like a good idea but when the bugs come out, especially the mosquitos things can get a bit itchy. Avon’s Skin So Soft Bug Guard Plus will help keep the critters at bay for up to 7 hours so you can enjoy your starlit evenings without the hassle. The spray can be applied on clothing or directly to the skin without causing dryness. (Retail price $14.00)

For an all over radiant summer glow the NUXE Huile Prodigieuse Shimmering Dry Oil is infused with light reflecting gold sparkle to illuminate and perfume the skin with vanilla, coconut and floral notes. The light, non-greasy formula can be spritzed onto the body and rubbed in for a golden goddess glow that makes skin look dewy, healthy and sunkised. Infused with 6 botanical oils including: macadamia, hazelnut, borage, sweet almond, camellia and St. John’s wort the nutritive formula repairs, softens, and hydrates without preservatives. (Retail price $45.00)

When it comes to fragrances I like scents that are fun, light and sexy. Currently I’m loving Amour by Avon with its fresh blend of citrus, jasmine petals and elegant musk. This is one of those trendy, modern aromas that appeal to many women and you can use it all summer long. If body sprays are more your thing then Bath & Body Works has a huge selection to choose from, some of my favorites are Twilight Woods and Pink Chiffon.

If you are ready to bare it all this season and show some skin Bliss has released the Hide & Glow Seek- their first tinted body spray. The formula combines luminous skin loving color with light diffusers to camouflage and smooth imperfections immediately! Infused with peptides and caffeine this lifting, firming spray tones and nourishes with natural oil, antioxidants and vitamins while reducing the appearance of cellulite for swoon-worthy bombshell legs! The spray is non-greasy so it doesn't rub off on clothing and retails for about $38.00.

When it comes to hair it’s all about keeping my tresses protected, soft and manageable so the Leave-In cream by Klorane is a must! This treatment is light and moisturizing so no matter how long you spend in the sun you can regain that smooth bounciness. The rich fatty acids and proteins strengthen and repair for softness and shine without build-up no matter how much you apply throughout the day! For more Klorane products click HERE.

When the humidity strikes my hair tends to get a little wild so I tame my strands with the Frizz Ease Secret Weapon Touch-Up Cream which seals hair to eliminate frizz and flyaways. This works well in the summer because it has a UV filter that protects against dryness and damage and it can be applied to dry or wet hair. It also works well on natural curls for shine and manageability.

The Got 2b All Star MVP Perfecting Cream is an all-in-one product that helps shape, smooth, shine and volumize with anti-frizz power for all your summer styles.

To keep your makeup fresh in the midday heat I have a few products and tips that can help. A makeup setting spray like the MAC Fix+ helps prolong your pigments and refreshes the skin. If you want something more budget friendly the E.L.F. Makeup Mist & Set gets the job done and only costs $3.00. The All About Matte Oil Control Paper by essence helps blot away shine and sweat to keep you looking dry and fresh and don’t forget to apply primer to your face and eyelids. I like the 5 Second Blur by Garnier and Urban Decay’s Primer Potion. Carrying some setting powder with you and a small travel brush can also help refresh your face; I like MAC’s Studio Fix Powder or Make Up For Ever’s HD Translucent Powder.

If you have any products that are essential to surviving summer leave a comment below and add them to the list!
