Popcorn can be a delicious, light and healthy snack but
those microwave popcorn bags are not so healthy.
Microwave popcorn bags are lined with PFOA which is a
chemical that has been linked to cancer in animals and lower vaccine response
in children. Repeated exposure to the
non-stick lining has also been linked with increased risk of some cancers. There is a chemical in microwave popcorn flavoring that has been linked to
bronchiolitis obliterans, a condition which makes it difficult to breath.
The popcorn you buy in movie theaters even without adding
butter is loaded with fats and salt which in my opinion makes it a waste of
calories because it isn't a meal.
Despite all this, popcorn can still be a very healthy snack that is
high in antioxidants and low in fat.
While on a detox at the beginning of the year I learned a
healthier and delicious way to make popcorn. All you need is:
*A $20 popcorn popper, (I got mine at Walmart)
*Popping seeds, (my favorite brand is the President’s Choice popping corn)
*Grape seed oil
*Sea salt
This method of making popcorn is also much cheaper in the
long run than buying microwavable bags.
All you have to do is follow the directions on your popcorn
popper and after the popcorn has finished popping drizzle with grape seed oil, toss/mix, sprinkle with salt and toss. The grape seed oil gives the popcorn a delicious flavor and in my opinion taste much better than butter. Adding the oil instead of butter also prevents the popcorn from getting soggy.
This popcorn looks yummy! I'm trying to eat healthier so I might try this :)
ReplyDeleteIt is! When I was on the detox and this recipe was listed I thought eww who wants grape seed oil on popcorn, but then I tried it and it was so delicious! even my hubby who loves butter prefers it!
